The City of Wylie was founded in 1887. The Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railway brought the initial growth to the area in the 1880s. Its 2022 population was 62,356. Major employers in Wylie include the North Texas Municipal Water District, City of Wylie, and Wylie ISD. Wylie is also known for nearby Lake Lavon. Students in Wylie attend Wylie ISD (17,482 students); and also, some areas are in Plano ISD, Garland ISD, Rockwall ISD, Princeton ISD, and Community ISD. Wylie is home to the new Collin College Wylie Campus.
